When I made the leap to leave my toxic relationship I had to navigate the system by myself even though I had little to no finances, no resources, no support, and no idea what I was doing. I’m Tori and I have personally experienced the abuse and corruption of the Family Court system for over 10 years. I have left abusive relationships and have first-hand experience with lack of police help, lack of help from domestic violence shelters, and lack of friends/family.
In 2018 I became homeless, I had no job because I had just left a relationship where my partner had coerced me to be the stay at home parent, and my last surviving parent had just died. I sought the help of a domestic violence shelter who only helped file forms, but did not provide additional support, did not help me name the abuse, did not help me with documentation, and lacked information on coercive control or what happens after filing. Following this I experienced a lawyer who coerced me into a custody order solely so we could agree faster- thus my bill low because he knew I did not have the funds to “fight” long. At no point did anyone (legal or otherwise) offer support, further education on laws, help with strategic communication or documentation.
Since I had no family help, very few people who believed me or supported me, it was solely up to me to figure out a way. When my youngest (now 2 years old) was only 4 months old I went back to school and have since obtained 2 legal degrees, and 3 additional certifications.
I have personally and formally learned the process and steps of the legal system, created a documentation system of my own, created my own communication style in a high conflict co-parenting case, and completely (and successfully) changed many of my own cases and situations. Not only did my own education and system knowledge help me obtain 100% legal and physical custody of my daughters (with 0 visits from the other parent), it has led to me to have been offered many job opportunities from local law firms and led me to successfully assist many other victims of domestic violence.
My goal
is to empower all victims of domestic violence, especially those who have very little to no funds and little to no support system. I believe there is a huge lack of assistance available, and with coercive control on the rise, these victims- just as I once was- are who needs more resources.
